Little Shop Of Horrors - Suddenly Seymour

Exercise needs and reality
A rough start has already happened as I had to cancel my appointment with my trainer today because I had to come home to await the dryer repair man who actually appeared an hour and a half BEFORE the window we were supposed to be there for him. Amy was home. The little piece that pushes in when the dryer door is closed to enable it to start had broken off, to the tune of $150.
I will get to the gym Tuesday (hopefully with my trainer), but I have to leave immediately after work on Wednesday as we're going to the Braves game (my Phillies are in town) which will mean ballpark food. Thursday I leave work immediately to the dentist, but I imagine I can go by the gym after the appointment as Amy will be working that night. Friday it's straight home from work to rest and head out to dinner before our adoption support group monthly meeting, and Saturday I leave work directly to go play cards (lame excuse not to exercise, but it's my best source of relaxation).
NEXT WEEK will better. I think I scheduled myself Monday through Friday only, working 47 hours and getting off early enough each day to be able to go to the gym afterwards. We'll see what fivve days of strength and cardio will do for some impact. I have a number of people who have said I look slimmer, but I have not lost any weight, so it's all fat/muscle/tone conversion.
I meet with Cooper once a week, doing two weeks of upper body to one week of lower, and most weeks we close out the last ten minutes doing boxing work, which really gets the heartrate up!

Tuesday's final bonus - Name the 8 premiers/leaders of the Soviet Union. We got 6 correct and one incorrect. I knew the name of a 7th but didn't remember, and the 8th I had never heard of.
Wednesday - The best question we had that I took pride in getting right was, What was the name of the the character who betrayed Neo in the original Matrix. You had to have the character name, knowing it was Joey Pants (Joe Pantoliano) was not enough.
This week we'll be playing with the Houghs on Tuesday and Wednesday we will be going to Turner Field (The Atlanta Olympic Stadium) to see my beloved Philadelphia Phillies in the third game of their 3 game series against the Braves.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Josh Hancock, a key member of the bullpen that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series last season, was killed in a car crash early Sunday.
The Cardinals postponed their home game Sunday night against the Chicago Cubs.
A vehicle driven by the 29-year-old Hancock apparently struck a truck that was assisting a disabled vehicle, team spokesman Brian Bartow said. The Cardinals and police were expected to make a statement later in the day at Busch Stadium.
Hancock's death is the second of a Cardinals player in less than five years. Pitcher Darryl Kile was found dead in a Chicago hotel room in June 2002. The 33-year-old Kile died of a coronary artery blockage.

DRIVE-ing into the sunset
FOX TV has apparently already pulled the plug on their new show Drive. While I was interested in the show, I had a hard time stomaching the poor quality of making it even remotely believable by filming the entire thing near deserts and mountains and telling us the cast was racing through FL and GA.
This makes the second show this year I wanted to watch that got the ax. The other being Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

InVENTively Published
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has an amateur comedy column called The VENT. Originally the idea was for people to write or call and leave messages about what they are mad about, but 95% of the vents are attempts at humor. My friend Jeff still submits his and reads the column online from Memphis, and he has had several published. Today I had my second VENT published in about 6 months time.

10 on Tuesday #3 - 10 Idols/Heros when you were a kid
1. By far, Michael Jack "Mike" Schmidt - #20, the third baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies. When I was 9 I got to see him play in the World Series (I went to game 2, the Phillies won in 6 games). Yesterday (4/16/07) I received my much-awaited replica Schmidt jersey!
2. Deborah "Debbie" Gibson - in 1987 she stole my heart, clean cut, cute, positive lyrics, and she sang, wrote, produced and played instruments, making her a far cry more talented than Tiffany.
3. Baden Powell - I was a Cub Scout and later a Boy Scout, and Baden Powell was the founder of the modern day scouts.
4. Peter Christopher - he's my older brother. Though just 2 and a half years older, he was 4 years ahead of my in school due to a July birthday and skipping a grade in elementary school. I liked hanging out with him and his friends (he didn't always like it). As I was a big kid, people sometimes asked if we were twins.
5. Barry Manilow - it's my mother's fault. Before I knew what taste in music was, she bought me some of his music and I remember getting excited one Christmas when I got the album of his Greatest Hits Volumes 1 and 2.
6. Susan Richardson - Not really an idol or hero, but she was from my hometown and had made it as an actress as one of the daughters on TV's Eight is Enough. IMDB shows a lot of TV work in the 70's and mentions a nervous breakdown she has recovered from in the 1980's.
7. Hall & Oates - two more guys from my part of SE Pennsylvania - they were the first concert I ever attended (at age 14).
8. Ultraman - Long before the Power Rangers there was Ultraman. The best I can remember, it was about a group of Japanese people fighting evil (including Godzilla-like enemies) and the hero would become Ultraman by pressing the button on some hand-held thingy, morphing into a giant robot-like fighter!
9. The Matel Corporation - I was all about collecting Matchbox Cars and Hot Wheels cars. I had carrying cases for them and would show them off to my next-door neighborm the daughter of the associate pastor at my church (we were both about 7 years old).
10. Bo and Luke Duke - My brother and I loved the Dukes of Hazzard. In 1982 when we were told we were moving to Georgia I got very excited and looked for Hazzard County on a Georgia map. I couldn't find it because, well, it doesn't exist. :(

If that's not a quote from Braveheart, it should have been! The final half-season of HBO's the Sopranos started last week and things are looking pretty grim.
Tony is in a spot considering there is some mistrust issues with Christopher (the nephew who's like a son). Davis Chase even gave us a Godfather homage with the scene of Chris' daughter's Christening.
Johnny Sac is dead and someone off'd one of the front-runners for the Boss' job. Phil Leotardo is pretty bitter, still hating that Tony's cousin killed his brother and that he didn't get to kill Tony's cousin himself. He also holds some animosity for the people at Ellis Island who changed his last name from Leonardo to Leotardo. He'd rather his namesake be DiVinci than a dance garment.
I'm thinking things are gonna get bloody here real soon.
By the way, am I the only one who thinks Paulie Walnuts shoulda been taken out a few seasons ago? Let Vito be gay, he produces money, Paulie's just nuts.

A Crazy Day
My day began at 6:30 this morning with my alarm. I checked email and my blog responses, changed the cats' litter box and showered, shaved, left for work.
I only had a 5 hour shift today, 8am-1pm, but it was crazy. We had a deadly combination of being short-staffed and unusuakky busy. A typical Saturday morning is quiet until about 8:30 and picks up to chaotic around 9:30 when everyone rolls out of bed. We usually start with 3 or 4 people on at 6am and increase by 8am in order to start running breaks. We then add staff as the morning progresses so we are fully staffed for lunch, our busiest time.
Today we opened with 3 people, a manager and two teenagers. When I arrived at 8, that manager left to tend to some church youth soccer duties, no other employees were scheduled until 9am. Business was picking up at 9am, so I could not send anyone on break as the first two teens were running the drive-thru and the new arrival had to help me on the front counter. At 9:50 a fifth team member arrived so I had her clock in early and started running one employee at a time, so I had them all done by 11:20 or so. We managed to continue from that point without staffing issues, but we were busy!
A typical busy Saturday has us do about $2500 to $2800 in sales before 11am. Today we did $3150 while short staffed! I spoke with the owner and he authorized me to reward the staff with giftcards we have for such purposes ($10 at Walmart).
I got out at 1pm and headed off to Winston's to play poker and watch hockey. It was an excellent way to wind down and relax fromthe week. I played well, and got lucky a bit, finishing 7th in a pool of 30 players. I did not win anything, but the game itself is a reward. I watched my Atlanta Thrashers fight to win the second game of their playoff series, but alas we now have to go to New York City and try to win 4 of the next 5 games against the Rangers.
I left Winston's around 6pm and got home to a great smell as Amy had made a pot roast in the crock pot with potatos, carrots, mushrooms, onions and garlic. It was VERY good.
I am now watching some poker on TV and watching out the window as it looks like snow as the petals blow off our cherry tree in the back yard. A very strong storm system is moving through Atlanta and will make for an exciting weather night. Amy is at work and tomorrow is loosely planned.

Friday Flashback - Rocking Movies
Welcome friends. Our trip back to the 1980's today focuses on movies about rock bands. We have Joan Jett from her movie with Michael J. Fox called Light of Day, Fire, Inc. (which no one has heard of, but it's a great song written by Meatloaf's writing colaborater Jim Steinman) from the 1984 film Streets of Fire, and we have John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown band providing the music for Eddie and the Cruisers. The cool coincidence, is the lip-synching lead singer in Eddie and the Cruisers is the same guy who plays the hero in Streets of Fire (but does not sing or lip-synch). It's Michael Pare, who was also the bad daddy who left Sandra Bullock in Hope Floats, and he also played the head cool student in Ralph's class on The Greatest American Hero.

Yesterday we received word from our adoption agency that our dossier (big stack of paperwork) is now on it's way to China! This means it passed the critical review (t crossing and i dotting) and was translated in the past 3 days and it is now on it's way to the state adoption administration in the People's Republic of China! Friday Feast #5
Appetizer : When you travel, what mode of transportation do you prefer?
Have to go with instant teleporter, but as those are hard to come by, I like the control of driving, but not the time it takes, and I like the speed of flying, but not the hassles of the airport and the small spaces as a 6'2" guy.
Soup: Have you ever met a blogging friend in person?
If I keep it to blogging, and not any online connection, I can still say yes. I met several friends of a friend. I got to know them while our mutual friend was engaged and we met at the wedding.
When was the last time you were really, really tired?For me it's really any time I am sick, though I was not sick Wednesday night. I went to bed just before midnight and could not get up til 10am yesterday and then I napped more once I got downstairs.
Main Course: If you could have dinner with one fictional character from a book or a movie, who would it be?
Frank Bama and Trevor Kane, the lead male and female characters in Jimmy Buffet's Where is Joe Merchant? Of course he had a friend who would have to be played by Randy Quaid if they did a movie, but I see Frank as a 40ish Harrison Ford and Trevor as a early 30's Meg Ryan. Fun people.

Thirteen Memorable Vacations 1. Sometime around 5 or 6 years old, we went to visit my grandparents who then lived in Buffalo, NY. We went to Niagara Falls and Toronto. 2. Sometime also before third grade we went to went to Williamsburg, VA. It stuck out to me so much I went back for my honeymoon and again for my fifth wedding annversary. The Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens is STILL a favorite roller coaster. 3. Sixth grade - 1983 - we went to Orlando and visited Disney World within the first year that EPCOT Center was open. We got back just in time for the opening of Return of the Jedi. 4. Way too young to remember, I was 9 months at the time, in October 1971 we visited Marineland near St. Augustine, FL and Disney, on the SECOND weekend it was open. 5. September, 1998 - NYC. All on my own, I travelled to NYC to see some shows, including Deborah Gibson performing as Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. I met with a friend and we went to Atlantic City. I won $3300 on a slot machine at Caesar's Palace! 6. Las Vegas, February, 1999 - Flew out with a friend to meet 9 other friends because Deborah Gibson was touring in Funny Girl. The show went on hiatus at Christmas and did not come back (a producer pulled out). We still went and had a great time for this long weekend. We even went to Hoover Dam too. 7. Cancun, Mexico - October, 1997 - it was a reward for my office and it was this or a short cruise. I took my Aunt Tina (more like a cousin) as she had just endured a divorce and I came back with a broken vertebrae after being thrown from a horse while riding on the beach. My doc back home had no idea what the pain killer they gave me was! 8. Key West, FL. - November, 2001. I went down with the Parrotheads of Central Florida for the Meeting of the Minds, the annual Jimmy Buffet Fan Convention. I got all the partying out of me and the day I got home, I got engaged to my Amy. 9. May, 2002; March, 2005; September, 2005; May, 2006 - Our four Caribbean cruises! First and fourth were trips with the Pentz family (my in-laws) on Disney Cruise Lines. The second was on Costa, with my father and his wife, a quieter, older crowd, and the third was half a cruise due to a hurricane that delayed our departure from Saturday to Tuesday. 10. Summer, 1992 - Marco Island, FL. I was working for Marriott resorts in Orlando and got an employee rate for the resort in SW Florida. It was hot, and the sand was so white it was blinding in the sunlight. 11. December, 2003. Chattanooga, TN. I took Amy for a weekend away from home to do the touristy things. We went to Rock City atop Lookout Mountain, we went to the Tennessee Aquarium and IMAX and visited a nice mall there. 12. Summer 2003, Nashville and Jackson, TN - Amy and I went to see her friends and her college town. We spent 2 or 3 days in Nashville and loved the country music hall of fame and the Opryland Mall. We ate dinner with live music on Broadway in Nashville. From Jackson we drove to Memphis to see the zoo and enjoyed it a great deal too. 13. April, 2004 - London, England. I was a student teacher at a high school in Orlando and their two magnet programs were in International Studies and Drama, so for Spring Break I was a guest/chaperone for their trip. We saw several museums and churchs and saw plays in the West End (my first viewing of Les Miserables and Cats) and in Stratford-on-Avon I fell asleep while watching the Royal Shakespeare Company perform MacBeth. I DID enjoy some fish and chips from a street vendor in Stratford though! |

Wordless Wednesday - Concert Color/Blur
Back in 1999 I was living in Orlando. I had taken a photojournalism class while working on my degree in Advertising/Public Relations, and that had lead to my doing some work as a freelance photographer. (You may recall my water main shot I previously posted). I started working with some local bands, one of which was Von Ra. I got to know them well, even travelling with them to Atlanta and Nashville to shoot them in label-seeking showcases. They eventually went national, but never got the radioplay needed to thrive. The biggest accomplishments were touring with Creed and having a single on the Smallville (TV) Soundtrack.
In these shots, I was experimenting with low-light and concert-lighting. The results included some cool blur effects, especially if you look at the amp in the second shot, check the lights.

A Very Satisfying Week
Good afternoon y'all!
It's Sunday, about 3pm and Amy and I are relaxing and watching some TV with Lucy the Basset Hound. We got up and out this morning to attend church at Heritage Presbyterian in Acworth. After services we stopped at Family Christian Store so I could get another copy of Casting Crowns' first CD and Amy got some books. We then went in search of lunch, encountering full parking lots and packed restaurants all along Hwy 92 in Woodstock. Our best guess is that First Baptist of Woodstock is having rehearsal fornext week and everyone has to be back this afternoon. We settled on La Gondolier. We'd looked at La Gondolier for the past two years but never stopped in until last week. Its a very nice family-run Italian/Greek restaurant owned by a Greek family.
I spent the last seven days helping open a new Chick-fil-a in Atlanta. For the first time I was part of the marketing team and not part of operations/training. it was a neat difference. I spent about 75% of my time in a cow costume, greeting guests, taking pictures with kids and adults, and standing out by the road waving people in to try the newest Chick-fil-a in NW Atlanta.
The highlight of the week came yesterday. I was due in to work at 9am, and I immediately cowed up and went out to drive business during breakfast. At 10:30 they brought me back in to rest and get ready for my special assignment. The owner of this Chick-fil-a also owns a unit about 5 miles from the new one. That unit was participating with a private school for special needs kids for their Easter event, which included an egg hunt, DJ, pony rides and other carnival rides. The Easter Bunny and the Cow made a great appearance together and I actually bellieve Iwas more popular. I danced to the "duma duma" Hungarian song and some other party songs with the kids. I snuck up on parents and bent to one knee to hug kids and take pictures. I think there were about 100 kids plus family members there. It just felt REALLY good to see the responses from the kids and bring joy to them.
After work (1pm) I went to our Wednesday trivia venue (Winstons) to play poker. Saturdays are quieter than Friday night and I came in second place of 30 players, winning a $15 gift certificate. After poker I drove to my home Chick-fil-a because I had to key in invoices and cut checks for the end of the month and finally home to Amy where we cooked out hamburgers and I crashed around 10pm.
This week I'll be back to my regular routine, work and hitting the gym. We will also be submitting all of our paperwork and our next payments for our adoption on Wednesday, so it will be a very special day for us as once we are translated and sent to China (DTC meaning Dossier to China) we'll be looking forward to our LID (Log-in Date).
The week also holds plans to do some gardening including buying and planting some new azaleas and figuring out what to do around our mailbox as I never planted the bulbs I bought lasst fall.
